Care Innovations™ Reports Record Growth in 2015

Business Wire – February 29, 2016 – Care Innovations™, a pioneer in connecting the care continuum to the home, had its strongest year in 2015 since the inception of the company in 2009. The company earned new customers, diversified the sectors of the care continuum it services and expanded its clinical programs with long-standing clients. Care Innovations saw a 300 percent increase in the number of RFPs in RPM in 2015 over 2014, and they spanned a variety of organizations and conditions from the standard chronic conditions of diabetes, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, to pre-term births, organ transplants and mental health.

In the first quarter, Care Innovations expects to deliver and engage with more than 2,000 Amedisys patients suffering from CHF, COPD, diabetes, depression and associated co-morbidities.

Care Innovations extended their collaboration with UMMC to build on a statewide population health program, the Diabetes Telehealth Network. Early results from the first phase of the collaboration indicate the program improved the health and lowered the cost of care for participants, who live in the Mississippi Delta, with the potential to save Mississippi Medicaid $189 million. The expansion aims to enroll 12,000 more members in the network over the next 12-24 months as well as expand their offerings to other states with similar challenges.

RPM continues to grow as the need and demand to shift care into the home increases. The number of patients using some sort of remote health monitoring device doubled in 2015 to 4.9 million.1 Projections for 2016 and beyond are just as strong. A 2015 report estimated the number of patients who are remotely monitored will grow annually by 48.9 percent and reach more than 36 million in the next five years.2 As the demand increases, companies are turning to trusted companies with a proven track-record in the space who can provide turn-key services that enable them to successfully deploy and grow their programs.

Reimbursement and legislation advancements support continued adoption and expansion of RPM. In February, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced the Creating Opportunities Now for Necessary and Effective Care Technologies (CONNECT) for Health Act that would expand RPM services for Medicare members, aiming to improve care outcomes, connect patients with their health care providers and help reduce costs for patients and providers. Currently, 29 states have telemedicine parity laws and for the first time, the White House included specific telehealth improvements in its proposed budget.3 These policy efforts are a sign of positive momentum in the space.

GCC Batavia’s Telemedicine Gives Students Professional Care from Anywhere

GCC’s Health Services – February 28, 2016 – BATAVIA — Genesee Community College (GCC)’s Health Services is now offering telemedicine to students at its Batavia campus, providing students with professional  care from anywhere.

According to a press release from Genesee Community College, a partnership with Genesee Urgent Care has led to the development of telemedicine coverage on its Batavia campus, allowing patients with access to licensed medical professionals in real time, regardless of location.

“While access to the Telemedicine Network is currently only available to students at the Batavia campus, the intent is to grow this to GCC’s other campus centers as well,” said Genesee Urgent Care President Melissa Marsocci.

Improvements in telemedicine technology have allowed for tools such as stethoscopes and ophthalmoscopes to integrate simply through a USB port. Telemedicine can also share x-ray images with orthopedics and electrocardiograms with cardiologists.

Currently the school offers two plans for access to coverage through telemedicine technology. The basic plan, which costs $60 per semester, offers unlimited access to a licensed medical professional for illnesses including cold and cough, flu, sinus infection, sore throat, urinary tract infection, rash and poison ivy, pink eye, mono, sexually transmitted diseases and bee stings. The plan also includes diagnostic tests through lab work that cover pregnancy, mono spot, RSV, rapid strep and influenza.

An additional plan is offered that starts at $300 and includes coverage for injuries such as fractures, dislocations, minor eye problems, sprains and strains, cuts, lacerations and burns.

Covered students in need of medical services that utilize telemedicine technology will need to check in with Health Services at the Batavia campus in room B109. A Polycom device known as HDX4500 is used to “call” the urgent care center where the patient and attending nurse can see and hear the urgent care staff. Providers from the urgent care center can also e-script medications to a student’s pharmacy of choice.

SDFI®-TeleMedicine Goes to the (Ultraviolet) Dark Side at Upcoming American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada

PRNewswire – February 25, 2016  – If you should happen to stroll by booth number 318 at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) Conference during February 24 – 26, 2016, and see people aiming cameras into little black boxes, don’t be alarmed.

This is just business as usual for SDFI-(Secure Digital Forensic Imaging) TeleMedicine LLC, a Boulder City, Nevada-based company, who provides forensic photodocumentation products, education, services and support to medical, legal professionals who assist with the reduction and elimination of physical violence throughout the world.

During the conference, which is taking place at Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, SDFI forensic imaging specialists will be giving hands-on demonstrations of The Contrast SDFI® Camera System, and that’s where the black boxes come in.  To get a good idea of how SDFI’s Contrast Camera System works, an ultraviolet light (included with the System) is shined into the box, lighting up pre-drawn, ultraviolet ink images.  Armed with surgically altered camera systems designed to capture ultraviolet images, participants will photograph and video record them.  In real life, this exercise allows examiners and investigators to capture court-ready, high-resolution pictures and video in the Ultraviolet Dark™.

The Contrast SDFI Camera System – which just debuted April 2015 – is a companion to The Standard SDFI® Camera System.  Both systems offer examiners the ability to take high-resolution, .RAW and .JPG forensic still photos and video, encrypt them using AES 256 bit encryption in order to store them on their computer or network, then electronically send them securely to recipients anywhere in the world.  Recipients do not need SDFI’s software to access the sent files and videos.

“Our Camera Systems are built to be easy to use,” Triston Fuel, SDFI’s Forensic Imaging Consultant, says.  Triston is quick to point out, “Our Camera Systems do not diagnose; they cannot tell you what you are looking at.  They do, however, help you see better – or in the case of the Contrast Camera System – help you see and easily capture something you could not otherwise see without a contrast light.”

Besides the Contrast and Standard SDFI Camera Systems, SDFI also offers a “Store and Send System”, where users encrypt and store documents and photos on their own networks and computers, then electronically send them to recipients.  They also offer Standard and Contrast “Add-On” options, allowing current SDFI clients to build their own SDFI System environments.  SDFI’s Image Management Software – which is included with every camera system– allows users to view their photos with SDFI forensic software tools like the SDFI Negative Invert Filter.  When utilized, this filter helps to see subtle details in an image that would otherwise be missed.  The software’s Loupe Tool, enables the System user to see an area of interest at one-hundred percent, allowing for incredible detailed viewing.

Business Wire – February 22, 2016 – Fulfilling its promise of bringing care faster to Northwestern Ohio residents experiencing stroke, Samsung NeuroLogica and Mercy Life Flight Network announce the debut of the mobile stroke unit (MSU) serving greater Northwestern Ohio. The fourth of its kind in the United States, the vehicle comes equipped with a CereTom mobile CT scanner and is on-call 24/7 and is staffed with a critical care nurse, paramedic and CT technologist.

Within its first three weeks of operation, the unit received 29 calls and treated 10 patients, one of them with a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a drug commonly used to treat ischemic strokes.

The CereTom CT scanner is a critical element of the process, providing scan uploads to specialists at the hospital in less than two minutes. For many stroke patients, time is critical for administering treatment that can prevent or minimize brain injury, and MSU teams can act on diagnostic tests in the field. Of the 10 patients the unit was dispatched to treat in the inaugural weeks of operation, nine received CT scans on the scene.

“The key to stroke care is determining what kind of stroke is occurring, whether it’s hemorrhagic or ischemic,” said Julie Goins-Whitmore, MBA, RN, EMT-P, Mercy Health MSU program manager. “Performing the scan out in the field quickens the diagnostic process, which is critical to starting the right treatment as soon as possible. It’s also a huge relief for patients and their families to have a much better idea of what’s happening before the MSU even leaves their driveways.”

The MSU was co-developed by Stryker, Frazer and Samsung NeuroLogica, funded with a $1 million grant from the Mercy Foundation. It was brought online in partnership with the Lucas County Commissioners and the City of Toledo to address new emergent stroke-care protocols. Lucas County sees a higher proportion of patients 45 years and younger suffering from strokes compared to the national average.

The CereTom is an 8-slice, portable CT scanner that delivers high-quality scans in a variety of patient locations. Its combination of rapid scan time, easy-to-use interface and immediate image viewing make CereTom an indispensable tool for any clinician needing real-time, high-quality images. It is optimized for use in a variety of settings including the MSU, ICU, NICU, emergency department and in patient rooms.
